See how to use Collage papers to create an Old World Clock Face

This is the Olde World Lilacs clock that will be in the Spring edition of Paintworks.
I thought I would share the process for developing the clock background.
(Click read more to see the step by step process)
(Note you’ll have to wait for the Lilac pattern and directions until Paintworks comes out.. but we can hook you up with BOTH collage papers and your clock so you’ll be ready to paint!

Easy step by step instructions for making clock backgrounds.

You can distress the papers by crumpling, sanding or burning

DecoArt’s Matte Decou-page Medium doesn’t re-activate with water like other
old fashioned decoupage mediums, it is available in 3 sheens, Matte, Satin and Gloss

I prefer Matte  for the simple reason that paints adhere wonderfully!

  • Apply DecoArt Decou-page Medium to the Clock surface
  • Apply DecoArt Decou-page Medium to the back of the French Ballade paper
  • While wet lay the clock on the prepped paper
  • Turn it over and smooth bubbles
  • Flip it over and trim on a craft cutting matte with the Fingertip craft knife

  • Apply a coat of DecoArt Decou-page medium on front of the surface and allow to dry
  • When dry apply a coat of medium to the back of the Victorian Station Clock Papers and on the area that the clock will be placed
  • Apply clock
  • Apply a coat of DecoArt Decou-page medium over the adhered clock
  • Allow to dry

Next lets apply the crackle medium and Antique the edges

Mix enough of each color paint into 2 piles of The Non-Tinted Texture Crackle Medium
Do not mix more than 50% paint or you’ll break the crackling effect of the medium.

  • Scrape on the clock keeping the colors in their perspective places.. i.e…. light color on the light area of the papers.
  • Allow to dry and see the cracks

  • Next paint on some chipped edges with DecoArt Americana Espresso
  • Glaze or shade the edges of the clock with DecArt Americana Asphaltum

TaDa…. here is the clock all ready for your Lilacs or any other art, or it’s just fine to use like this!

Enjoy this great technique!

I am also a self taught painter( no way as talented as you ) but 91 years old and still going strong as long as I can stay awake. I love all of your ideas and wish I had lots of money, but I do have a question. I purchased some of the material on which to paint, I believe it is called Rocklon, and I also purchased a hanger so as to make changeable door signs and I wish you would tell me what more I need to purchase and how to use it. I have patterns but need to know if there is a special surface that is needed to keep the material flat and from slipping etc.

I love this clock. You sure came up with a beautiful item here…and I have to try my hand at making one for me. LOL Would a 12 inch clock fit the paper? I will place an order when I hear from you. Thank you so much. I love your website and the Tole TV.
