Decorative Painting for…Nerf Guns?

It all started with the announcement that Club Kairos would be having a Wild West theme with a twist this year. What is Club Kairos? Well, several years ago, my church, Fellowship of Faith, started doing themed dinners for Valentine’s Day weekend. The first year I started going, it was a ’50′s diner theme. The year after that, it was a murder mystery theater. They were a fun way for families at the church to have a “date night” (even though kids were often involved). Eventually this morphed into Club Kairos (“kairos” being Greek for “the right moment”), with the idea that each year would have a different theme based on a period in history. Like I said, this year’s Club Kairos was Wild West. Wait, what about “the twist” I mentioned earlier? Well, after the success of the movie “Cowboys & Aliens”, we decided that maybe we should have some extraterrestrials show up to “take back their time-travelling technology”. So guests were encouraged to dress up either as cowboys or as aliens. I thoroughly enjoy dressing up for Halloween and plays/films when I can, so I was excited about it. I took inspiration from actor Daniel Craig’s character in “Cowboys & Aliens”, who wakes up in the desert with a bizarre alien cuff on his wrist that turns out to be a weapon. I created the costume of an “alien bounty hunter”, a cowboy who ran afoul with the extraterrestrials and stole a futuristic weapon that he uses to track down the alien menace. Ok, ok, most people didn’t go this far with their costumes – most just showed up in a plaid shirt and a cowboy hat. But I tend to go over the top on these sorts of things. Ask Patty or Jess.

How to Transfer a Laser Print with your Iron

How to Transfer a Laser Print with your Iron

I was going to title this “How to Transfer a Laser Print with Your Home Iron and Drive Your Husband Crazy Enough To Want To Buy You An ‘Art Iron,’” but I decided to shorten it a bit =) Basically I got to have an adventure over the long weekend last week with some paint, a spare Anyway Tray board, our “good” iron (as Dear Husband dubbed it afterwards) and an 11×17 copy of one of our new Chef phrases (this was one of mine, and I knew what I wanted to do with it as soon as I designed it!). It was my first attempt at doing a transfer like this, so there was some “live and learn” action going on, but I took pictures as I went so I could share the experience with you. The result was a lot of fun, slightly grungy, and made Patty squeal when I brought it in to show her, so this blog post was officially a go! Read on for the details =)

Quick Jess Desk Test

Quick Jess Desk Test

So we have a new way of printing paper here at Creative Arts Lifestyle, and we’re all super excited about the possibilities this brings. We were testing out new versions of our background papers left and right for probably longer than we should have been yesterday, but we just couldn’t help it. It was so much fun to see how the colors came out!

Patty’s thoughts on So Soft Fine Glitter Paint from DecoArt

When DecoArt introduced this line of paints called So Soft Fine Glitter, I kinda did a little eye roll… I have alot of paint and alot of glitter and I don’t do much fabric painting in my world of Decorative Painting..  Sooo….. I pushed it aside. Then while I was at Hoot (Heart of Ohio Tole Convention) a lovely artist named Debra Welty had some T-shirts she had painted that had the BEST sparkle to them.. low chunk gorgeous GLAM! And after I asked permission to touch  the shirt I saw that it doesn’t come off.. This was amazing.. so I took some out last week… played around with them… The So Soft Fine Glitter is glitter suspended in a paint and medium, it stays flexible like the So Soft paints do and  you can layer them over painted surfaces… One coat gives you a little sparkle a few coats.. MAGIC! Sometimes you need  ”GLITTER” and sometimes you need sparkle… I love that if you do wash this the product doesn’t come off and it won’t shed like some glitters do. Hands down I am a fan and am making excuses to use these great products, How would the Dog look with some So Soft Fine Glitter on his curly coat? LOL>… Come here Freckles! Patty

Howdy!

This is Dustin, the newest member of the Creative Arts Lifestyle team and half of Patty’s super-design team (the other half being Jess, who put this blog together). We’re working hard to help Patty bring you exciting new project ideas and products, everything from stencils and clip art (my personal favorite thing to create here!) to tips and tricks that we’ve learned over the years. And we have fun doing it! I hope to show everyone insights on our creative processes and give you sneak peaks on what we’re working on.

Hello Internet Land!

Hello Internet Land!

Hello world, this is Jess speaking. In case you don’t know, I’m one of the design team members here at Creative Arts Lifestyle, and I’ve been working with Joe (do you know Joe? He’s Patty’s techy son) to get this lovely blog set up. If you’re here before the launch is all “official” and stuff, there will likely be some design tweaks here, some page changes there, to make this an awesome place to come learn about the behind the scenes work we do, and probably a little bit about our Artsy Lifestyle. So, yes, I really am excited to be here! Can’t wait to start creating with you =)
